Rich Kruger will move to Executive Vice Chair next spring as the energy giant completes a board-led handover process.

Suncor Energy's board announced today that Peter Zebedee, currently Executive Vice President of the company's upstream business, will become President and CEO in April 2027, when current chief executive Rich Kruger transitions to the newly created role of Executive Vice Chair.

A staged handover

As an interim step, Zebedee will be appointed President and Chief Financial Officer effective September 14, 2026, taking on oversight of all non-operating functions while Kruger remains in place. The company said the plan is the outcome of a board-led succession process. Zebedee joined Suncor in 2022 after serving as CEO of LNG Canada, and previously held senior roles at Shell, Petro-Canada and Syncrude.

The move comes alongside the departure of Chief Financial Officer Troy Little, whose reasons for leaving the company were not disclosed. For a company Suncor's size, a staged, multi-step handover rather than a single announcement-day swap is itself a signal — it gives the incoming CEO operating and financial oversight before formally taking the top job, a structure governance advisors increasingly favour for large, capital-intensive firms.
